CRYPTOJACKING

Although 2017 will be Marked in history as the year in which bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose exponentially but this year hackers also devised a new technique Called CRYTOJACKING. 

As cryptocurrencies(Bitcoin,ethereum,monero,litecoin etc) are something that are not controlled by any central authority but they are mined and to get these cryptos. Miners of these currencies were supposed to solved CRYPTOGRAPHIC PUZZLES and these puzzles are very tough and require significant amount of computational power and  getting a high end system to mine cryptos is not in everybody's reach .SO Hackers And Scammers have found a way to use computers and mobiles for their greed.

They Devised CRYPTOJACKING  in this technique when a user visits any fraud website that website along with providing you data you require will also attach JAVASCRIPT code with that site and as Javscript does not require any browser permission(In most browsers) to run .These scripts run in Background to solve puzzles for scammers and this is not the end HACKERS have also devised a technique better than making these fraud websites(because every user will not get onto every website in this world)so this means that these infected websites have less reach to general public so they started flashing Advertisements and pop-ups and for the time these pop-ups and ad's flash on your browser in background they run javascript  to solve these puzzles(i'm not saying every advertisement is infected).Even YOUTube has Found some ad's in 2018 that were using mining cryptos by flashing these infected pop-ups

although these ad's were removed from YOUTUBE but cryptojacking is a

But according to some users and security experts cryptojacking is not such a big issue because they say these scripts only work for the time you on your BROWSER( exception chromebooks ).

The Pirate Mining Bay

World renown piracy site The Pirate Bay was recently caught using a JavaScript-based cryptocurrency miner on some of its pages. The premise is simple: you log on to their site to find a file (legal or not, no differentiation is made between users). In the background, a code provided by Coin-hive runs, converting your CPU power into Monero (a type of cryptocurrency) coins for the site administrators.
Numerous reports of sudden CPU spikes began rolling. The Pirate Bay administrators confirmed that they had trialed a Monero JavaScript miner because they “really want to get rid of all the ads,” adding that “we also need enough money to keep the site running.”

How to protect yourself?

1.If you are using chrome or firefox install Third party AD-blockers to protect yourself.

2.Regularly update your Antivirus.

3.Best option is to use Opera browser because Opera added a cryptojacking protection to the ad blocker in its desktop browser.As long as ad blocking is switched on, you’ll be safe from this cryptocurrency scam. On January 22, the company extended the same feature to its Opera Mini app for Android and iOS, along with the regular Opera browser app for Android.

4.Check your cpu usage when you visit a website if your cpu usage spikes suddenly be careful and try not to visit that site again.
